Can I show respect and compassion for all people and still oppose the redefinition of marriage?
Families Northwest serves and speaks from the premise that all human beings are created equal, with inherent and unique dignity as males and females, who together in balance, reflect the full image of humanity's diversity, complementarity and interdependence. We respect the necessary and complementary roles of male and female in human reproduction and parenting. We are concerned for the protection and well-being of all humans at their weakest and most vulnerable stage... as children. The common good of society and a prime interest of government is the protection and well being of children and the family structure which attaches both father and mother to a child.
We affirm the dignity of all persons and oppose unjust discrimination against any individual. Since many of the benefits currently sought by persons in same-sex unions can be obtained without regard to marital status, no compelling justification exists for altering the definition and institution of marriage. Marriage would be weakened by such alterations. Rather, it's crucial role in benefiting society calls for an effort transcending this debate to greatly strengthen the institution and the quality of married relationships.
