Have you ever tried to discipline your child and watched your son or daughter actually stiffen up, eventually leading to a battle? It might be because we’re delivering our messages in an antagonistic way. It could be we’ve forgotten the rule that “restrictions without relationship equals rebellion.” If we don’t build respectful relationships in our family but try to enforce some standard or rule, what we have on our hands is someone who wants to reject our advice and run. For little kids this is disobedience, for teens it may feel like rebellion. But part of it is just growing out of childhood. Remember how important it is to focus on relationship so that there’s respect for each other and the rules when we need to discipline. Training our kids can be messy, but if we have respect and focus on relationships, than rules don’t need to lead to rebellion.
