In 1963 the Green Bay Packers played poorly in a pre-season game that was coached at the time by the great Vince Lombardi. Known for his tenacity and ingenuity, Lombardi had the team take the practice field the following Monday wearing the same dirty, sweaty uniforms they had worn in that embarrassing loss. Lombardi started the practice with, "Gentlemen, this is a football." His point? Get back to the basics; the very fundamentals of the game. Now none of us need to be spoken down to, but all of us can benefit from being reminded that family is at the root of all relationships. We assume many times, after being married a couple of years, or being a parent for a while, that we’ve accomplished that, so we can check it off of our list. But what professional, whether it be your doctor or a ball player, would be worthy of their reputation if they took for granted and stopped practicing or learning. Marriage and parenting are the same; they require our highest attention and many times reminders to get back to the basics. Here’s a thought! What did you do when you were first dating your husband or your wife that you need to start doing again today? |
