To be happy we have to give a lot, not get a lot. Research on “happiness” points to one important attribute - “a self giving love.” Recently, USA Today announced they found the “Happiest Man in America.” He wasn’t a millionaire, didn’t possess the looks of a male model nor was he a CEO of an organization. J.P. “Gus” Godsey is 45 and an ordinary guy who comes off like ten gallons of happiness in a five gallon jug. A married dad who owns a 23-hundred square foot home in Virginia, Gus is a stockbroker who has had a bit of professional success. But that success is only a fraction of what sent him off the happiness charts. At the core of his personality, “giving” is the word that best describes him. Gus’ generous charitable lifestyle is geared mostly to the homeless and improving literacy among at-risk kids. Gus says, “the greatest use of life is to leave a lasting endowment that will last long after I’m gone.” If we want happiness we need to give away our love... and some of our stuff.
