The way to avoid divorce is for two people to understand marriage as a life-long effort to put the other person first. On a winter afternoon in Innsbruck, Austria at the 1964 Olympics, the British two-man bobsled team with driver Tony Nash had just completed their first run. They placed 2nd but made a disheartening discovery. They had broken a bolt on the rear axle of their bobsled, which knocked them out of the competition. At the bottom of the hill was the famous Italian bobsledder Eugenio Monti, who was in 1st place. When Monti heard of the problem he immediately removed the bolt from his own sled, and sent it up to the top of the hill. The British team fixed their sled, re-entered the race and won the gold. Monti’s team took the bronze. When asked about his help and sacrifice Monti said, “Tony Nash did not win because I gave him a bolt, he won because he’s the best driver.” Do we think less or more of Monti - was he a fool or a hero because of his selflessness? Putting the other person first in marriage makes us both a winner. |
