The messages we send ourselves matter deeply. No one’s self-talk contributed more to his life and leadership than Winston Churchill's. His home life was rocked by emotional neglect, filled with parental hypocrisy and unrealistic expectations. But he kept believing and saying the right things to himself. At a commencement speech at his alma mater, Harrow School, Churchill rose to his feet, gazed at the audience and uttered a 29 word speech summarized by three words: never give in. In those few words he shared his most powerful advice. His personal self-talk carried him through pain and failure to noble achievement. He persevered past a tragic family background and multiple political defeats to lead the world to freedom from totalitarian domination. Never let failures destroy hope, or wounds prevent you from becoming a whole person and inspiring your family to be their best.
