We all know that Dave Thomas of Wendy’s sold a lot of hamburgers. But more importantly, Dave, a national spokesperson for adoption, had dedicated his life to leaving no child behind. While he was once filming a commercial on adoption with two young kids, a nine-year-old boy commented how he and his sister would never get adopted because of his seven-year-old sister’s scar. The girl’s father had hit her with a beer bottle. Dave’s business associate took out two $100 bills and told the kids that they were to go Christmas shopping. "But there’s a catch," he said. "You two can only buy presents for each other, nothing for yourselves." Some time later Thomas heard from the couple that had adopted both these kids. The parents said they were especially proud of the brother and sister, and admired how much the two loved and cared for each other. Thomas spoke about that account of love and caring to a group of students at Hillsdale College. He concluded by saying "that five-minute course on caring out-did the best universities anywhere." What a lesson to teach in our families! |
