Honoring Their Dad

Janet Prins honored her husband John for over 50 years. Whether it was in private conversation with friends or at public gatherings, the Prins’ two sons, Jim and Jack, recount their mother always praising their dad in positive ways. Through today’s media and culture dads can be viewed in a variety of ways, from heroes to bumbling buffoons. But author Louis Yablonski says, “How mom thinks of dad may make the most important imprint on a child.” Yablonski talks about growing up and hearing his mother say negative things about his father. As a result, the three sons grew up believing their dad was a failure. They never noticed his virtues or values or the fact that he worked very hard and provided for them as they grew up. The author concluded, “My overall research clearly supports that the mother is the basic filter and has enormous significance on the father/son relationship. Children tend to see their fathers through the eyes of their mothers and easily pick up the subtle attitudes that lie just below the surface.” Mom, Dad, how are we both doing in speaking well of, and honoring, that other important parent. |
