Beyond being just biological contributors, fathers have such a vital role in our culture. Child psychologist and Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services Wade Horn points out that, “Marriage is the glue that holds fathers to their children, something that today’s kids need.” New research out of the University of Washington titled “Why are Men Less Religious?” concludes that some men are short sighted and just don’t think ahead. One quote states, “going to prison or going to hell just doesn’t matter that much to these men.” This study points to the fact that men, more so than women, tend to have shorter time horizons and focus more on immediate gratification. The genders are different! As we look at today’s high rates of assault, robbery, abuse and even rape and murder, particularly among urban and primarily unmarried men, it’s worth looking at marriage as more than a social option, but rather a societal institution. Healthy and positive marriage is actually one of the most successful and helpful steps in preventing crime and damage that men do to others. One of the key values of committing to marriage is that it creates better men.
