I attended a seminar with my wife Stacy where both dads and moms were encouraged and challenged to apply some basic principles to their marriage. Husbands were challenged to ask their wives what it is she really, really wants to do. If her heart is gravitating home to the kids, how can you as a husband respond and make it possible in your family to allow her to spend more time together with the kids. Now in some families you may find this formula to be reversed where the dad may want to stay at home through a certain stage of your kid’s development. He just may be cut out for it. We have most of our lives to do our work and pursue a career, but our kids are with us for such a short time. Sure, you can have it all, but you can’t have it all at once! Our children can discern the difference between if we are working for needs or if we are working for wants. A parent that sacrifices themself to work hard to provide for their children versus a parent who sacrifices their presence with their kids so they can purchase or achieve more things. Kids receive these as very different messages.
