I think most everyone has the best of intentions in terms of aiming in life to be loved and having someone to love. And many, in targeting to be happy in a close relationship, will take a course or attend a marriage seminar. Popular author and speaker Gary Smalley tells a great story about a couple who attended a retreat and decided that they needed to participate in some common hobby or activity to refresh their marriage. She begged her husband to take her deer hunting, which was his premier pastime. After a while he broke down and bought her a rifle, showed her how to use it, and then set out on a hunting expedition. He set her up in one spot in the woods, walked off to find his own, when suddenly he heard three quick shots from where he had just left his wife. As he rushed back to her spot, he heard a man say, "Okay, okay lady, you can have the deer! Just let me get my saddle off it first!" This lady was a classic case of having good aim, but the wrong target. And her husband failed to explain the difference between a deer and a horse. Isn’t it true that too often we fail to set our targets on the things that will truly satisfy, truly build, and would bring the most happiness. Not only to us, but to our children and the next generation.
