The director and producer of “The Passion,” Mel Gibson, has been married to his one and only wife for 22 years. Although he acknowledges the couple has had their ups and downs and their share of what he calls “I’m outta’ here moments,” Gibson says “that’s what happens in a marriage. It’s easy to throw in the towel when there are bad days, but if you can just hang on through the grim times there’s only one way to go, up.” He’s right! Family scholars out of the University of Chicago studied over 5,000 married adults over five years. They found no evidence that unhappily married adults who divorced became happier than couples that stayed together. In fact, almost 80 percent of unhappily married spouses that stayed together reported five years later their marriages were happy. Gibson says, “those tough experiences put you in the furnace, your mettle is tested, and you come out stronger.” |
