Transcript Friends of ours tell a funny story about how the husband took some cheese out of the frig and put it in the microwave. When his wife saw it she said "boy, that’s a pretty big chunk of cheese honey." But what he heard was "Hey fatso! That's a big piece of cheese for your figure!" What she meant was big pieces of cheese don’t melt well in the microwave. Many times daily, what we say and what we hear are different things. Here's a couple of reminders to help our relationships be at their best:
First, it's important that the messages we send are clear and accurate. So many words and phrases sound ambiguous with just the slightest emotion or inflection.
Second, we guys generally want to fix things, and many times we're not patient to hear what's being said. We all need to work at being empathetic and listening with our hearts, as well as with our heads.
And we all need feedback. Let’s you and I practice responding and repeating what we’ve heard, so that all of us can understand what’s being said. |
