The competition on the field in the NFL between first and second stringers can be fierce, especially between quarterbacks. All-Pro Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck, once Trent Dilfer’s backup, was the guy the fans booed as they begged to have Dilfer back on the field. But following injuries and then the tragic death of Trent’s son Trevin, Matt became the starter. Dilfer, crushed by his son's illness and death, wasn’t ready for football. It didn't matter. He didn't care. Who was it though... but Hasselbeck, once his backup, who persuaded him to return. He told Dilfer, “my goal for this training camp is to be the friend you need.” Through the sad and empty months they became each other's best friends, staying up through the night at training camp, sometimes just sitting in silence. What a picture of friendship triumphing over competition! I’m encouraged to be the kind of friend my friends need... to help them make a positive difference in their family. |
