Many people watch the Super Bowl for the great commercials. A few years ago one included a music group that delivered a message to a dad at the front door of his home. The message was simply that “they are not the role models for his kids, parents are.” It reminded me of another popular entertainer and sports figure, Charles Barkley, who a few years back complained that people shouldn’t bemeasuring him up all the time as a role model but should rather be looking at parents. Barkley insisted that moms and dads were the true role models for their kids. Now, kids are influenced by famous athletes and stars, many times negatively. But the core message, backed up by current research, is parents have the biggest influence on kid’s lives. Parents do make a difference and have a powerful role in their kids lives, daily. Particularly in a day and age when kids need us more than ever before. |
