I remember back to my freshman year in college when I was a pretty insecure back-up quarterback and was sent into a game. While running onto the field my coach yelled at me, "Kemp! Don't fumble!" I’m sure a lot of kids dread being talked to like this. But some parents don’t talk to their kids at all when it comes to discussing drinking, drugs or particularly sexual involvement. You know, it really doesn’t have to be that way. A coach can get far more out of his players by practicing positive coaching. And he’d be much more effective by telling his player to "Keep the drive alive!" "Protect the ball!" This puts it in the context of the goal with some positive advice to exert self-control and discipline towards a bigger goal. It’s the same with our kids. There’s a lot of confusion out there, especially as kids use former President Clinton’s example and testimony to rationalize their behavior. I know how you feel. It’s awkward talking to our kids about sex. But let’s work at coaching our kids in a positive direction - to
exercise self-control and give them reasons to set high standards.
