In a Washington State survey by Families Northwest we found that people believe the condition of marriage is getting worse. And with all the recent publicity on Hollywood marriages, it would be easy to assume that is true! Just a few weeks ago, friends of ours had one of those rare mid-week nights together while their kids were busy with activities. The two went out on a date for coffee at a nearby Starbucks. After talking and laughing with each other, the wife playfully jumped in the husband’s lap, to which he asked in front of everyone, "Do I know you?" The guy sitting at the table next to them said, "Mister, if you don’t you’re one lucky guy!" Later on a young woman came up to the two and said, "How long have you guys been married?" The wife said, "15 years, it’s awesome!" She turns to her husband and says, "Can you believe it honey? 15 years!" The gal smiled at the couple and said, "Wow, you guys give me hope!" Here was a picture of a committed marriage that was fun, exciting, and vibrant after 15 years. And for one night it inspired a whole coffee shop, because it gave people hope that committed marriage does work. |
