I just found out the other day that Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer was created by Montgomery Ward and it was Coca Cola that actually got Santa Claus off to his big start in America. But did you know that if we study history we’ll find that the three wise men were not fictitious characters created to sell something. These people were actual kings and leaders from the Far East who followed a bright new star in the east, looking for a predicted new King, and finally arriving in Bethlehem. They found this baby boy with His mother Mary and His father Joseph in a poor, rugged environment of a barn amongst the animals. Quite a humble beginning! Upon the arrival of these three unknowns, gifts and riches were given to this new baby who they honored as a king. It’s fascinating to look at history and see that in 1804 the legend of Sinterklaas, and the Dutch tradition of giving gifts, began in earnest here in America. This holiday season whether it be for Hannukah, Christmas or other celebrations, let’s let the giving of gifts remind us that our lives take on importance because we live them in relationship to others. And the greatest gifts are gifts of commitment, forgiveness and love from the heart. |
