In Sports Illustrated's “play of the year,” Ohio high school student Jake Porter, a mentally disabled boy who never got in the game before, scored a touchdown in his only carry of the season. The story involves two coaches who met during a time-out. The opponent's coach, Derrick Dewitt, insisted that this mentally handicapped kid who was finally getting the chance to play would not only carry the ball for the first time in his life, but find open field and enjoy scoring a touchdown. Well, the play unfolded with Jake starting off backwards, being redirected by the referee and the whole defense opening up and cheering for him as Jake ran down field crossing the goal line. Emotions have never flowed more freely than after that touchdown, particularly from Jakes mom - a speechless, teary-eyed single mom who hugged opposing coach Derrick Dewitt. Every mom and every dad wants their child to know the thrill of victory. But more importantly they need to know the thrill and the security of being loved. As we smile at this great story let’s all look around in our own families and to others and send that message of affirmation and love. |
