The difficult trials and challenges of the Pilgrims are well documented from letters and journals of those that lived through it. The Pilgrims spent 66 days in the hold of their small ship, the Mayflower, before setting foot on land on December 26th, 1620. After losing 46 settling Pilgrims that winter, the following summer was one of beauty, friendship and bounty. The summer’s work along side the Indians provided shelter and a fall’s harvest that provided more than enough corn and barley to see them through the next winter. In a letter sent from Edward Winslow on December 11th of 1621, he writes, "we have found the Indians very faithful in peace, very loving and ready to help us." There are times, like today in our nation’s history, that best teach that our differences are less important than what we have in common - like love for families and loyalty to our nation. As President Bush’s leadership has illustrated, the greatness of our country goes beyond helping each other to helping others. Let’s help our children respond to his request to give money to meet the needs and the hunger of the children of Afghanistan.
