Transcript The Pilgrims arrived off the shores of America November 21, 1620. The 102 passengers stepped out of the Mayflower ill-prepared for the cold winter ahead. After 46 deaths, the new settlers faced a tougher challenge the second year when 35 new colonists arrived empty-handed. They came with no food, no tools and no extra clothing for the upcoming winter. The next day those in charge made a sobering appraisal: the colonists would have to go on strict food rations. They were reduced to a meager five kernels of corn per day and asked to pray. The starvation that ensued took another 18 lives. But the next year was different. Prayers were answered with an abundant harvest, and the second Thanksgiving was shared with over 120 Indians and a bounty of food. As a special reminder the first course was an empty plate with five kernels of corn, lest anyone should forget the year before. Here is a great way this year to build perspective about how much we have to be grateful for. Let’s copy those Pilgrims' first course, and start our meal with five kernels of corn and the story of the second Thanksgiving. This will help us experience a Thanksgiving that satisfies the heart, not just the appetite. |
