Teach Your Teens How to Drive Responsibly

The most costly single car accident in years recently occurred in Washington State when six young people lost their lives in a small car crammed with seven people. There are too many tragic stories of teens in auto accidents where lives are lost and way too often drinking is involved. My heart breaks to think of the pain experienced by these families and friends. It reminds me, though, of how vital our job is as parents to teach our kids that cars are more than just transportation, they can be lethal weapons. They can be deadly. It doesn’t take much error for a vehicle of that weight, speeding down a freeway, to create lasting damage. I’m really a believer in the learners permit period. And there’s an important principle here - the education of a young person over a year while an adult accompanies them. The teen gains experience under the cautious oversight of an adult driver. I think every parent should take advantage of this permit period and give kids as much behind-the-wheel experience as possible. Teach them clear messages about responsibility and the dangers of driving. Parents, our primary responsibility is not just demonstrating confidence in our teens, but training them with skills to understand the potential dangers of driving. |
