Transcript
Dr. Gary Smalley mentions some powerful, research-proven benefits for couples meeting in small support groups. These are groups that are meeting before they’ve got a big problem or are in crisis. In addition to improving communication skills, Dr. Smalley has found that people learn new and healthier parenting skills. And it’s easier in a small group to overcome and change some of our own dysfunctional backgrounds. One of the great things about small groups is we learn that our faults and our weaknesses are similar to those of others. It creates empathy and some realism so that we have more hope to endure and build the best possible marriage. Also, single parents and couples receive the benefit of the counsel, experience and wisdom of other people. Americans are looking for "community," particularly since having our world shaken on September 11th! Family is the basis for community, and marriages can be strengthened in the community of a small group.
