Transcript Following the attack on September 11th, 2001, our country went to war against terrorism. The first American serviceman killed by the enemy in Afghanistan was Sgt. Nathan Chapman. The 31-year-old father of two was recognized at a memorial service in Fort Lewis, Washington. His wife was presented with Chapman’s combat badge, his Purple Heart and a Bronze star. The Chapmans' one and two-year-old children were held by their mother and grandparents. In addition to the things that our nation chooses to recognize about this noble soldier, he needs to be remembered for something else. Chapman was committed to the people that needed him most - his wife and their two children. Nathan Chapman was a good family man! And the memory and evidence of that commitment will make a difference as his family faces the many challenges of living without him. But they will have the benefits of the memory of a man that was committed as a father and husband. These are the things that need to be recognized and honored for our children’s sake!
