History has shown that the most powerful way to help people grow and learn, mature and succeed, is mentorship. It empowers relationships and helps guide people through life’s tremendous journeys. But have you ever thought about the power of mentorship for marriage? One place where it’s practiced is in the New Mexican, Hispanic culture. They’re called Padrinos de boda, which means marriage God-parents. These are people that are responsible not for just helping out with wedding rituals, but also for counseling the God-children, or the Ahijados. The marital God-parents also work with their God-children when they encounter marital difficulties. All of us know that marriage has seasons, and challenges come with any relationship between two human beings, particularly when they’re as different as a man and a woman. But marriage God-parents or mentors, or just special friends that have been there before, are one of the greatest resources to young couples, or any couple. Who could be an encouraging mentor to you and your spouse? And what young married couple needs your encouragement? |
