Kids Need a Positive Place and Vision

On the surface, our most troubling problems today involving kids appears to be emotional problems, violence, drugs and alcohol. But when it comes down to it, doesn’t a lot of it tie into the fact that kids lack hope? That they lack a positive vision for their life? A positive place? The Boys and Girls club have a great slogan. They call their club "a positive place for kids." But shouldn’t a family be the most positive place for kids? And don’t kids not only need a positive place but also a positive vision? It’s amazing how powerful a vision can be! Vision can overcome so many obstacles. Consider Erik Weihenmayer who lost his eyesight at the age of 13 to a rare eye disease, but has always retained his vision. In fact, though blind, his vision involved goals to climb some of the world’s highest peaks. Through hard work and persistence this blind mountain climber has reached three of the world's highest summits, and is planning to climb to the top of Mount Everest this spring. Erik is a classic reminder of what Helen Keller said years ago, "that not having your vision would be a much worse fate than losing your eye sight." |
