We talked yesterday about how important communication is in a family; how taking the time to communicate effectively and directly means being patient and respectively taking the time to repeat back what was heard. A four-year-old boy was eating an apple in the back seat of a car one day while he was riding with his dad, when he asked, “Daddy, why is my apple turning brown?” ”Because,” his dad explained, “after you ate the skin off, the meat of the apple came into contact with the air, which caused it to oxidize, thus changing the molecular structure and turning it into a different color.” There was a long silence. “Daddy? Are you talking to me?” Effective communication in a family relationship is paramount! We need to seek to understand the other before we seek to be understood. Try the "drive-thru technique." Repeat the message someone sends you back to them, until they agree you got it. Then ask them to do the same. This way we won’t be stuck saying to a family member, “Hey Are you talking to me?” |
