When the “sexual revolution” exploded in the 60’s, the younger generation began talking pretty openly about sex. Many admitted it wasn’t talked about at home much and claimed that life would be different when they became parents. But 30 years later it’s still a subject that most parents dread. Psychologist Phil McGraw, concerned about middle school kids becoming sexually active, points out, “the number one way to know what your teens are thinking and doing about sex is for the parent of the same sex to be constantly modeling and communicating their own values.” It makes a difference! In fact sociologist Peter Bearman found that both “abstinence pledges and a perceived parental disapproval of engaging in premarital sex” had an influence in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of teens. So how do we talk about it and eliminate the awkwardness? The most natural way to discuss it is as it comes up in the news, at school or in entertainment. That way the pressure is not directed at your child or even you. And yet your values can clearly come across to your child.
