For Your Family's Sake, Leave Work At The Office

One of my favorite coaching lines of all times was from former Seahawk coach Chuck Knox who said, “What you do speaks so loud, I can’t hear what you say.” This reminds me of a young newlywed husband who was working long hours. After hinting to the employee several times to go home, the boss finally pulled the new husband aside and told him, “I really think you need to go home and be with your wife.” It was at that point that the guy said, “You know, I’m not really sure which message to listen to - the one you’re telling me now or the many work related e-mails you send me throughout the weekend.” Most of the time it’s our actions that speak louder than our words. And one of the keys to a healthy family is knowing that our work needs to be dropped before we arrive at home. My pastor takes the worries and burdens of that day's work and in his imagination drops them off at a certain road mark on his way home. Then the final five minutes of his drive he can decompress and think about his family. Hey, what kid wouldn’t want his parent to come home, having dropped the job so that he can pick them up? |
