Transcript I know some of you moms and dads, like my wife Stacy and I, are in the stands regularly watching our kids in some kind of sport. From try-outs, practice, and play-offs, through baseball, soccer, or football, it’s year round and many times non-stop. And a lot of the time kids' identities are wrapped up in their performance. Did you strike out or get a hit? Did you catch a pass or drop one? Are you the starter or the backup? Is your team winning or losing? This is where a kids' self-esteem is on the line. And guess who needs to be on their team more than anyone else? We parents. Our job is to encourage them. Many times I’ve had to heed my wife’s advice: make sure today everything you say is positive - don’t go out there and coach all the details, just find positives and encourage them. Now that’s a message for parents as well as a few coaches listening today. When it comes down to it, our foremost job is to shape and build our kids' character and identity, not their win/loss record. Hey! How about you and I start a little movement to get the best out of sports for our kids, once again. |
