Dropping Our Pride in Order to Keep Our Family First

Sometimes our stubbornness and pride gets us into some dumb situations. I bought a tank of gas from a car rental company and played a crazy, competitive game of trying to return it as empty as possible. Going over my receipts from the last day of our vacation I noticed one for three dollars and ninety cents. That was the one before our last 100 mile drive to the car rental at the airport. And another receipt for three dollars and twenty cents. That one was for the can of gas I had to buy when I ran out, just two miles from the airport. That’s right - while my family sat in the car cooking in the 93-degree heat and chuckling at their dad, I hitchhiked to the nearest gas station. I’d been kinda’ proud, thinking I had timed it perfectly; then the engine died! And it was pretty hard looking at my wife who knew it wasn’t frugality but a game I was playing between the rental company, the gas tank, and myself. How often does our competitiveness or our stubbornness keep us from doing what’s safe and best for our family? In addition to keeping a little gas in my tank, I’ll use this to remind me to drop my pride, apologize to my wife and listen to my kids. |
