We Can't Recycle Time With Our Kids

Success - there are many forms of it in today’s culture. I think most of us would recognize that if we have personal success and career success at the expense of our family, we’ve failed. Secondly, and just as important, our child’s athletic, musical, or academic success at the expense of childhood and family time can be a tragic sacrifice in today’s culture. A childhood is a once in a lifetime window. And to over-schedule a kid is to shrink that window, which can never be re-opened. In this fast paced society, are we losing opportunities to just hang together and form the relationships and comfort of family? Hindsight is always 20-20 - just ask those that are feeling the effects and emotions of the empty nest. In looking back, wouldn’t a dad rather have a son who knew he was loved and loved him, than a dad who had a son who's main memory was winning a little league world series. Although the glory of the moment and the trophy may shine and sparkle for a time, it can’t take the place of a childhood built on the love of parents. In a generation that recycles everything from plastic to pencils, there is one thing we can’t recycle - family time with our kids. |
