I’ve coached my kids' football teams for years and I know that this can be one of the most exciting times of the year for parents and kids. From boys and girls soccer leagues right up to the NFL, sports will bring many families together. And a great question to ask ourselves and to also ask some of the coaches that our kids end up playing for is "are we transmitting to our kids a performance-based value system, or a relationship-based value system?" The most important question a young person wrestles with is "Am I accepted and am I loved?" Parents, do you know who the most important person to answer that question in your child’s life is? It’s you! We can do a great disservice to our kids if we fall into a performance-based value system where sports, winning, and making a select team dominate our kids view of life. Our kids begin to believe that they are only accepted if they perform. But good parenting is unconditional acceptance. In the big picture of life, it’s more important that your kids love, obey, and listen to you because you loved and accepted them, then whether they impress or win on Saturday. |
