Are We Encouraging the Lasting Qualities in Our Kids?

I think most parents have gotten the message that kids need encouragement. And although many of us may be good at encouraging our kids, too often we parents are focusing on outward performance. Grades, musical ability, and athletic accomplishments get noticed, praised, and encouraged. But are we missing some of the more lasting qualities that many times are just as important, but maybe not quite as obvious? Those are just as important achievements - like a kids' character, or choices they make that demonstrate integrity, or maybe their dreams, goals, and purpose in life. The key for us adults is to remember that those true successes on the inside are just as important as their outward achievements. Face it - every kid craves to hear words of re-enforcement and appreciation. Hey! Let’s encourage our kids' character this week. And when they treat someone well or control their temper or take a responsibility seriously, let’s point it out and tell them how cool it is. |
