When it comes to the family’s weekly schedule, how does your family face the tough decisions like conflicts between responsibilities and commitments? Maybe your friends want you to go out, but your spouse has something important for you to do at home. Or your job has given you a huge responsibility keeping you away from a planned family event. Now, some of us might think that the simple equation to resolve all these issues is "if you love your family, you choose it above all else." But I think you know, life just isn't that simple. Schedules like these can be resolved on the principle of honor. Mariner Brett Boone’s dad, Bob Boone, had to choose between accepting an invitation to start in the 1979 All-Star Game in Seattle, or stay home with his wife who was about to deliver their third child. Now this could’ve been a costly and divisive decision, but it wasn’t. Bob and Sue Boone honored their family, their boys, and their parents by calling a family meeting and making a "family decision." Including others is honor. And honor solves complex problems.

The Boone family decided that Bob should go to the game in Seattle and take sons Bret and Aaron with him. Today both Bret and Aaron play baseball in the Major Leagues. Their younger brother, Matthew - who was born during that All-Star Game in '79 - plays in the Minors.
