Years ago a boy watched his toddler-aged younger brother pick up a pen and begin to scribble through their dad's prized book. It was an older classic in mint condition. But as the father walked into the room, the little boy cowered, sensing something was wrong. Books were precious to their dad and as he sat down and began to look carefully at the page, the brothers sat still, not saying a word, and expecting immediate punishment. But instead of yelling or reprimanding the toddler, the dad took the pen from the little boy and began to write on the same page: “John’s word, 1959, age two. How many times have I looked into your warm alert eyes looking up at me and thank God for the one who scribbled in my book.” That quote, from one of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul books", lead Arthur Bowler to write, “Now when I watch my kids scribble in my books, I remember how my father taught me about what really matters in life: people, not objects; tolerance, not judgment; and love, which is at the heart of family." Isn’t it awesome when a dad demonstrates to his kids that he loves them more than he loves things. |
