Some high profile Hollywood types have questioned if a dad is even necessary. And there’s talk recently about the worthiness of fathers. Ironically this comes after about 20 years of research that says that the most powerful influence in a child’s life is whether or not they have a father that is connected, involved, and present in their lives. There’s a simple but powerful story about a busy businessman who one day took a day off from work. He decided he would spend the day fishing with his son. Both the son and dad wrote about the day in their journals that were found years later. The dad wrote, "Spent the day fishing with my son. It was the biggest waste of time this year." The son wrote, "My dad took me fishing today. It was the best day of my life." Was this kid and his attitude rare? I don’t think so. In surveying kids recently we asked what would most improve your life? Above money, possessions, friends, experiences, or anything else was the number one answer - more time spent with dad. What an encouragement to realize that we dads can make our kids' lives better, just by choosing to focus our attention on them. What do you think we can do tonight, tomorrow, or this weekend that would express your love and improve our children’s life? |
