There are some family friendly programs on the tube these days but you’ve got to look pretty hard for them. Maybe you have cable or even satellite TV, and have found yourself clicking through the stations only to think, “200 channels and nothing good on TV.” Well there are exceptions! Some shows not only entertain but they remind us that family, moms and dads, are vital in the raising of kids. A great example of this is “Smallville,” the latest in the Superman legacy. The TV program tells the story of young Clark Kent, caught between the boy he is at present and the man he is destined to become. University professor Alex Wainer of Georgia State University teaches film and is impressed. He says, “Clark’s father, Jonathan Kent, understands that a Superman unanchored by virtuous character is something that should terrify us.” So Clark’s dad takes every opportunity, whether it’s chores or casual conversation, to teach his son how to steer through the treacheries and temptations called adolescence. We imperfect dads don’t need to be, and can’t be, Superman. But our teens - sons and daughters - need us to model and coach virtuous character. |
