During Abraham Lincoln’s Presidency, Lincoln would sit in the pastor’s study on Sundays so he could attend church without causing a distraction. One Sunday after the service the pastor re-entered his study and before Lincoln left, the pastor pressed the President for his thoughts on his sermon. Lincoln graciously responded by telling the pastor he thought it was good but unfortunately it failed. The President said, "It failed because it didn’t challenge us to do something great." This is true for us as well - we must be challenging ourselves to our higher callings and more noble purposes and standards. And this starts by modeling a higher standard in our own life, like working hard to make family relationships our greatest success. The applications of this are powerful! Teens need to be viewed for the potential they represent, not the awkward struggles or sloppy habits they may exhibit during a tough phase of life. Let’s challenge teenagers to do something great, to prepare for the best possible future and likely marriage. Let’s encourage teens to be excellent in relationship building and moral character.
