Are We Encouraging Our Kids?

Encouragement is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. Back when I was playing football for the Rams an article came out in Sports Illustrated that stated the Rams were interested in a new quarterback out of the University of Maryland named Boomer Esiason. While I was in California my mom and my younger brother Jimmy called me on the phone from their home in Maryland. My mom mentioned the article with trepidation. She said, "Oh, I read that the Rams might draft Boomer Esiason." Realizing that wasn’t good news for her son, a struggling free agent and possibly unemployed quarterback, she caught herself and said, "Oh but don’t worry Jeff, you can beat him out." With that my 12-year-old brother popped, "No way, Boomer’s good." This generated a couple of chuckles but also struck up a little doubt on my part. But my mom made a good effort at encouraging her son. Every one of us needs to have someone in our corner. Moms and dads, are we encouraging our kids? Encouraging them about their character before their performance, their personality not just their grades? And reminding them that any dream is available to them because we believe in them. |
