A popular high schooler tore the back of his raincoat exiting the school bus for school one morning. Ignorant of the mishap, his friends thought it was a new trend and before the day was over 20 other boys tore the middle of their coats. When this ring-leader realized what had happened, he laughed with his classmate as he shared how his coat had accidentally ripped. An author recently noted that no matter where you travel in today’s world, teens have adopted a herd instinct. He’s noted there’s a remarkable sameness to their culture. From Australia to Latin America, Vancouver to the Tri-Cities, adolescents seem to dress in similar ways and have common attitudes. And why not? They’re watching and listening to the same movies, CDs, and television shows. Couple this with e-mail and the urge to merge is rapidly occurring thanks to the electronic revolution. Hey, if teens will go to such great lengths to feel like they belong, then don’t we need to go the extra mile to assure them that they’re loved and accepted? Whether they look cool or not! |
