What a year on Wall Street! Enron, World Com and a year where investors once again saw that stock markets go up and down. Similarly, researcher Scott Stanley saw that relationships have up times of joy and happiness and down times of pain and repair. Bailing out or making quick changes does not achieve “happiness,” Stanley’s research revealed. Though some divorces are necessary, a short-term mentality that makes happiness all-important leads to tendencies to divorce quickly and seek other partners. Stanley found that route is not leading to happiness. The key to success in marriage is found in a long-term perspective. If you’re married, or thinking about it, decide today to a) hang in there in the tough times, and b) invest every day in making a poor marriage healthy or a good marriage better. Your marriage is only as good as what you’re investing in it.
