Here’s a silver lining to a very dark cloud, an inspiring message from a sad story: Sgt. Nathan Chapman, the first combat casualty in Afghanistan, left a wife and two kids behind. But he also left something else behind: video tapes that he intentionally made to overcome the fact that his military lifestyle left him large amounts of time away from his kids. Nathan Chapman wanted to be present in their lives, he wanted them to know that he loved them, and he wanted his kids to hear his voice. In addition to being with them when he could, Chapman video taped himself so his kids could look at his face and hear his voice when he was away from them. Wow! There’s a message in that for me: be creative in letting our families know that we love them. Play some games, write some letters and save them for your kids, record a tape or a video. This man may be gone, but his memory and messages to his children are not. |
