Sgt. Nathan Chapman of Puyallup, Washington was the first American serviceman killed by the enemy in Afghanistan. Following a ceremony at the cemetery, roll call for the Army’s 1st Special Forces occurred. Three times Chapman’s name was called, only to be answered with silence. But the more important role call for Sgt. Chapman had already been answered. Chapman was a committed husband and father of two toddlers. He may not be there when they finish kindergarten, score a goal or graduate from high school, but the commitment he made to his family is a legacy that will be with those children forever. Losing a parent is a painful tragedy. But did you know that research shows the challenges and negative effects on children are greater when their parents divorce? Now, there is always hope. But let’s hope that this society pays more attention to making marriages work, so fewer children see a parent go away and fewer moms and dads face parenting alone. |
