Transcript The first American serviceman killed by the enemy in the war in Afghanistan was Sgt. Nathan Chapman. The 31-year-old father of two was recognized at a memorial service in Fort Lewis, Washington. His wife was presented with Chapman’s combat badge, his purple heart and a Bronze star while their two-year-old daughter rested on her mother’s lap. Chapman’s parents held their one-year-old grandson. In addition to the things that our nation is grateful for and chooses to recognize about this noble soldier, he deserves another honor. Nathan Chapman was committed to the people that needed him most: his wife and their two children. Although the title has gone out of vogue, it shouldn’t have - Nathan Chapman was a good family man! And the memory and evidence of that commitment will make a difference as his wife and children face the many challenges of living without him. But they will have the benefits of the memory of a man that was committed as a father and husband. These are the things that need to be recognized and honored for our children’s sake!
