Transcript In her book "Our Last Best Shot," Washington Post columnist Laura Sessions Stepp interviewed 10 families of adolescents. What she discovered was in these homes, what works best, is giving teens responsibility. This is the one thing todays society many times does not give teens. Kids today are too often treated as consumers rather than producers, and thats a big shift from the America our parents and grandparents grew up in. Farms and family businesses allowed and depended on teens to contribute in numerous ways. But her book has great news! Giving kids responsibility is the greatest way to assist them as they grow and mature. Do you realize what giving a kid responsibility does to them? It builds their self esteem, and that's powerful in all areas of life. It also might be the key that you as a parent are looking for to get out of the role of lecturing your teen into the type of character and decisions you want them to make. Try letting go but give them some responsibility and see how real life consequences and the power of being able to contribute to something will shape their character.
